Avengers Endgame: Why did Iron Man's death surprise?

As logical as it is, the tragic end of Tony Stark in Avengers Endgame still took more than one person by surprise.

Avengers Endgame signed the end of the journey for Iron Man, thus putting an end to the hero's adventures in the Marvel Studios universe . As tragic as it is logical, the death of Tony Stark above all made it possible to conclude the character's narrative arc in style, making him a hero and savior of the universe, unlike the insolent selfish introduced in the very first Iron Man . However, his sacrifice still surprised more than one spectator. Not because the decision seemed to be out of line with Tony Stark, but because some elements of the MCU and Avengers Endgame suggested that he would remain safe and sound.
